HONEYLAB HEAD | Blender Setup

✧ MY BLENDER VIEWPORT SETUP

💡Tip: Here's a look at my blender setup so you can have your avatar looking the same while you're editing and creating in blender! It’s super simple and easy!

This is also great for those who are unsure how to see their transparent textures in the same lighting as Viewport Shading in Solid.

  • All preview images for the head used this setup, I even rendered through View ➜ Viewport Render Image

✧ Fix Shapekey Maxxing After Editing

After creating your head edit, make sure to check these:

  • Visemes
  • Emote Presets
  • Blinking Shapekeys
  • MMD and Facetracking shapekeys

If a shapekey is pushing too far after you've made an edit:

  • Switch to Edit Mode in Blender
  • Select Materials HONEYLAB Head, L Eye, R Eye, Lashes and Transparent
  • Press CTRL + V ➜ Blend from Shape
  • Make sure that Add is checked on
  • Adjust the value until the shapekey looks right

✧  transparent blender setup

💡 Tip: Below is a visual example of how your transparent textures for Lashes and Transparent should look.

Alpha:

  1. Add your Transparent Mask texture.
  2. Connect it to your Principled BSDF: Color to Alpha
  3. Change Color Space to Non - Color

Material Settings:

  • Settings > Surface > Render Method: Blended > Transparency Overlap ON

✧ BEFORE EXPORTING TO UNITY

Before exporting your finished avatar:

  • Make sure the combined mesh is named “Body”
  • Test your blinking, visemes, emotes, MMD and Facetracking shapekeys to see that they look correct
  • Test the bones in Pose Mode to make sure they work
  • Save your Blender file before exporting
  • Export your FBX directly from Blender! This helps avoid issues in Unity that are common when exporting from the CATS Plugin.

✧ OTHER TIPS

Want stronger visible transparent lashes? Duplicate the lash mesh, move them back slightly and flip the normal!

See a black smudge on the back of the neck? Put the Seamless Neck texture on top of your body texture in a paint program, save and apply.

  • It's always best to start with an unedited head and body.
  • Once you merged your base I recommend saving the FBX so you don't have to do the merging steps again!
